When the Bundesliga season started in August, many people expected Bayern Munich to win the German title in comfortable fashion, just like they did last season. However, a stuttering start from the champions, combined with an impressive start from Borussia Dortmund, has left the title race wide open and given Dortmund a chance they probably didn’t expect.
After seven games, Dortmund are unbeaten in the Bundesliga and sit at the top of the table with six victories and one draw. That gives them a five-point cushion over Bayern, who have already lost one game and drawn two. That may not seem too bad, but combined with their 3-0 Champions League defeat at Paris Saint Germain and stories of player revolt, that was enough for Ancelotti to get the boot.
While Bayern are going through a rough patch and have a lot of work to do going forward, Dortmund are having a great time so far. After their star youngster Ousmane Dembele signed for Barcelona in the summer, many thought Dortmund had no chance of overturning the 18-point deficit they had on Bayern Munich last season. However, so far they are proving that they do have enough quality in the squad and are building up a nice lead while their rivals sort themselves out.
The impressive start made by Dortmund has seen them excel at both ends of the pitch. They have the best defensive record in the league, alongside being the league’s top scorers, and while keeping both up will be tough, fans will be thrilled after the first two months.
The star of the show going forward has been striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who many people thought would struggle a little with Dembele leaving his side. However, with 13 goals from 11 games in all competitions, he has stood up and led his team, despite no Dembele in the team. He is known as one of the best strikers in Europe, and so far he is living up to that billing by putting in some great performances.
The latest Bundesliga betting has Dortmund at 2/1 for the title, much shorter odds than at the start of the season. That price could drop even further in the coming weeks if Bayern continue to struggle and Dortmund can extend their lead at the top.
The problems at Bayern Munich have given Dortmund the chance to take an early lead in the Bundesliga title race and they have grabbed the opportunity with both hands. At the start of the season, many expected a comfortable Bayern title victory, although now things look very close and there is a genuine possibility of them losing their title.
The next couple of months are going to be vital in the Bundesliga title race, and Munich will be desperate to get back on track. However, Dortmund need to ignore that, and keep playing the good football that has taken them to the top of the table. They are in the driving seat and could well be heading towards regaining their league title.
